According to the study as Pittsburgh School of Medicine, teenagers who spend most of their time listening to music are likely to be depressed 8.3 times than normal teenagers. On the other side teenagers who read books tend to stay tiptop mentally.
The possible reason for this would be, when we listen to the music our brain releases dopamine in high amount which cause us to feel happy and excited but listening to music all day long uses up all the dopamine present in our brain which result in high depression.
According to Dr Brian Primack, it is not certain that people who are depressed listen to music to escape their depression or whether listing to music all day long causes high amount of depression.
The study has 106 student out of which 46 where diagnosed with depressive disorder. However the study showed teenagers who spend most of their time reading were 1/10 likely to be depressed. The other type of media TV, Movies had no noticable effect on the mental state of teenagers.
