How to assign a icon to your USB flash drive

Did you know you can customize the icon of your USB flash drive to give it a nice look. It can be helpful if you have multiple USB flash drives and you plug them together. It will easy to difference between the flash drives because of their icons. To put an icon to your USB flash drive you first need the .ico file.

 How to get the .ico file
You can either google for them you will find variety of .ico files with different images. You can also create your own .ico file from a picture using a software or online converter. I will recommend a online converter as they are free and you don't need to install them on your computer. My personal favourite is this one. Browse from the picture on your PC and convert now. It will generate the .ico in a few seconds.

How to change the icon of the flash drive
  • Plug the flash drive into the computer.
  • Copy the .ico file into the USB.
  • Open "Notepad" and type
[autorun]
icon=name.ico
(replace name.ico with the name of icon file that you have example myimage.ico"
  • Now save it into the USB flash drive ,with name "autorun.inf" (Dont worry its not that famous autorun virus)
  • Open the USB drive and right click on the "autorun.inf" that you just created and click on properties.
  • Check "Read only" and click "OK". This will prevent the autorun file to get infected by viruses.
  • Unplug the flash drive and plug it again and you will be greeted with a custom icon for the USB flash drive which will appear on every PC you plug this USB drive into.
