Running a single operating system on a computer is pretty mainstream. To be a geek you should have multiple operating system on your PC, to benefit from the features of both the operating system. So I am going to teach you how to install and run two of the most popular operating systems of all time Macintosh and Windows on a same PC. So lets get to the tutorial.
Before we jump to the guide We first have to make sure that we have following stuff, as we will need it during the process.
Before we jump to the guide We first have to make sure that we have following stuff, as we will need it during the process.
- Installation disks of both the operating system.
- Single partition with At-least 20GB of hard disk free space.
- A blank CD/DVD
- iBoot
- A boot setup software (i would recommend EasyBCD)
- A CD/DVD burning software (i would recommend infrarecorder)
Step 1: Creating Partitions
First thing we have to do is create a separate partition for Mac, there is no need to create a new partition for Windows as you already have drive C: for that. Partitioning the hard drive can be done by installation disk of any operating system and can also be done using different softwares. But I will use the easiest method of creating partitions in this tutorial i.e creating a partition using a window built-in tool called "Disk Management".
- Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" or simply type "Computer Management" in the search.
- Select "Disk Management" from the left column and you should see all of the partitions in the right column.
- Now right click a partition with at-least 20GB of free space and click on "Shrink" volume.
Next to "Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB:" type "20000" and click shrink this will create an unallocated space of 20GB on your hard disk and will shrink the selected partition. - Now you will be able to see un-partitioned space in the disk management tool with no drive letter i.e "/". Right click on that and click on "New simple volume" and a wizard will start.
- In the wizard select a drive letter i.e E or which ever letter is available and File System i.e NTFS for your new partition. Leave rest of the options to default and click "Next" and then "Finish" and you will be greeted with a new partition on you hard drive.
We cant just boot to a Mac installation disk and begin the installation like as usual we do with the Windows, but don't worry the process is not very difficult.
- In order to boot the PC with Mac OS disk we first have to make a iBoot disk. I assume you downloaded the iBoot before the first step or if you haven't download it now and burn it to a CD.
- Now boot the PC with the iBoot disk that you just created and you will be able to see a disk in the center and a red apple at the top of the screen. At this point eject the iBoot disk and insert the Mac installation disk and press F5 on the keyboard when prompted.
- The installation wizard will start. Click on Next after selecting your language.
- Now the Mac installation wizard will ask you to select the desired partition on your computer's hard drive in which you want to install the Mac. Select the newly created 20GB partition and continue the installation setup.
Step 3: Installing Windows
Now that all the complex task is done, we will move to the more easy task which is to install Windows. Even we didn't deleted Windows from the hard drive or haven't made any changes to the partition on which Windows is installed, it is good to install a fresh Windows.
- Boot the PC with Windows installation disk and begin the Windows installation setup.
- When ask to select a partition for Windows installation. Select drive C and format it and begin the installation on it.
After the Windows installation is complete you will notice that your PC will boot straight to Windows without any option for Mac. Don't panic Mac is still there and functionable but its boot up is overwritten by the freshly installed Windows.
Step 4: Setup Dual-Boot
For the Mac boot option to appear at the system startup, we will have to set it up using a software called EasyBCD. Install the software in Windows and follow the following steps.
- Open EasyBCD and click on "Add/Remove Entries" in the left column.
- Click on the Mac in the upper right column and then click on Mac tab in the below right column.
- In the "Type" drop down menu select "Generic x86 PC" and click on "Add Entry" and click on "Save".
