How data recovery works

Have you accidentally deleted a file from your computer's hard-drive, removed the pictures from you digital camera, or formatted your memory card and now want the data back? Well data can often be covered using different data recovery softwares, but many people wonder how does the data recovery softwares work to bring back all the deleted data.

For that we first have to understand how does the deleting of formatting process works. When you delete a file it goes into the Recycle Bin. The file still occupies disk space but is less accessible, to access the file again you have to restore it from Recycle Bin. After that when you delete it from Recycle Bin too, the file visibly dissapers from the harddrive, it does'nt occupy any of your harddrive space anymore. But the file still exist on the harddrive but are even more less accessible now. Now the question arrises why does the harddisk shows free space while the files are still there? Well your harddisk only removes index of that file which makes it no longer accessable but the data is still present on the harddrive. So the harddrive dont show you free space on the basis of data present on the it, it shows you free space on the basis on indexed data. If you have a 500GB of Harddrive, it represents it can index 5000GB of data. Same is happens in flash memory (memory cards, USB flash drive), the data is not vanished or erased but its index is removed. But why deleting a file does'nt removes the data and only the index of it? Well the answer for that is pretty reasonable, to remove the data permanently you have to overwrite it with another data which is time consuming, same times that it takes to copy the data. So for that only the index is removes which happens in a blink of an eye, on modern computers and devices.

Now when you formate a harddisk or flashdrive there are always two option, first one is quick formate which does the same thing as deleting removes the index of data and that data can be recovered. The second one is full formate which overwrites all the data on clusters with random scampled data. Thus that data cannot be recovered because it is replaced with another data and the old data is completely vanished now.

Now that we have understood how deleting and formating works we can now guess easily how data recovery works. Yes it reconstructs the index of the data. Some data that cant be recovered or is recovered but is corrupted is mainly because its been replaced and overwritten with new data.
I hope this helped you understand how data recovery softwares works. If you have any questions please comment below.
