How to configure a wireless router

After buying a wireless WiFi router, most of the people think that they will just connect it with their interne modem, and the router will start functioning right away. But its not the case, after buying a router you first have to configure it to make it functional and this guide I will teach you how to do that. There are a few basic steps involved, so and lets get started.

Connecting your WiFi router with internet modem

After you unbox your wireless router, it should come with manual, an Ethernet cable and the router of course. There might be some other stuff too but we just need these things in this tutorial. Take out the Ethernet cable and take a look at the back of your wireless router where the ports are located, you will find five ports out of which one will be of different color.  Plug the one end of the Ethernet cable into that unique colored port and the other end of the cable in any of the ports on your internet modem. Power on both the devices (wireless router and internet mode).

Configuring the WiFi router
  1. Now you will need an extra Ethernet cable, one end of which will connect with your PC/Laptop an other end with any vacant port on your wireless router.
  2. After you have done that take out the manual that came with the wireless router and look the manual for the IP address of the router. You can also find the IP address on the router itself where specifications of the router are mentioned. In most cases its 192.168.1.1
  3. Turn on your PC and open the web browser and in the address bar type the IP address of the wireless router e.g 192.168.1.1.
  4. It will ask your for the login details. Type "admin" for username and password both. If it didn't worked someone might have changed the login details but don't worry you can reset the wireless router by locating and holding the reset button for 5 seconds and it will revert any settings or changes done to the router in the past.
  5. You will be takes to the wireless router configuration screen. Find "Quick Wizard" or some thing similar. It varies on different routers. When asked for SSID type the name you want to give to your WiFi network e.g Home Network, leave every thing else to default and click next and finish.
  6. Now find the "Wireless" option and click on it. And next to "Security" click enable and next to encryption select "WPA/WPA2-PSK" and type a password for your wireless network.
  7. Save the configuration. And thats all.
Note: Step 5-7 may vary on each manufacturer, but they will be some what similar.
If you face any problem during the process comment below I will be glad to help.
